Abstract
Alkaline electrolysis is more cost effective because it does not require precious metals, but rather uses nickel- or stainless steel-based electrodes and inorganic porous separators or anion exchange membranes. However, alkaline water electrolysis suffers from a short lifetime, especially when under intermittent dynamic operation, and this issue delays their commercial success on a global scale. Here we report the current status of advanced alkaline electrolysis development in KIER which can be directly linked to renewable sources.
