Performance and Durability of Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

Anion exchange membrane(AEM) water electrolysis is a relatively new technology compared with other low temperature water electrolysis technologies such as alkaline water electrolysis and proton exchange membrane(PEM) water electrolysis. Performance and durability of AEM water electrolysis in particular hinges on the advances of AEM and anion exchange ionomer(AEI) among other components. Over the last decade, several AEM and AEI have been developed for alkaline electrochemical devices. In this presentation, current status of AEM water electrolysis technology will be reviewed and presented. Especially critical role of AEM and AEI on AEM electrolysis in terms of hydroxide conductivity, chemical and mechanical stability, and hydrogen crossover on the performance and durability of AEM electrolysis will be presented.
