Haldor Topsoe has designed the dynamic green ammonia plant that can convert ammonia syngas into ammonia as fast as hydrogen is being produced without a hydrogen storage. The synthesis is dynamic in the sense that the loop pressure is kept constant in the plant load range of 10-100%.
Any electrolysis technology can be used to feed the dynamic ammonia loop with green hydrogen and since far most of the energy to produce green ammonia is spent for the hydrogen production, the efficiency of the electrolysis will have a huge impact on the specific energy consumption. The most efficient electrolysis technology is Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells(SOEC) because it operates at high temperature.
Haldor Topsoe has a patented process for production of stoichiometric ammonia synthesis gas using SOEC only without an air separation unit for production of nitrogen. SOEC technology is the only electrolysis technology that can benefit directly from heat of reaction or other nearby sources for steam production and thereby significantly reduce the specific energy consumption of green ammonia.
The synergy between the heat of reaction from the ammonia synthesis and the SOEC has set a benchmark for the lowest specific energy consumption for green ammonia.
